Taken from today's topic of discussion, with my own spin on it...
Melissa Etheridge When You Find the One - http://www.lyricsdomain.com/13/melissa_etheridge/when_you_find_the_one.html
Talks about going through different experiences before you find the right love... Some lines stuck out, "I cried till i was dry" - reminds me of my first date with Reinar, on the anniversary of my mom's birthday, and His acceptance of and appreciation for my rawness in front of Him... "And now i live my ever after" - because i do believe that i'm so lucky to have such wonderful loves in my life, what girls dream of and i get to live it. "Lucky" is the title of this CD, btw. Reinar and i saw ME in concert for this album, in Reno at a GLBT pride weekend (which neither we nor ME knew about beforehand lol, but was still appropriate for us), when i was at the beginning of my pregnancy after a day of SCA with friends... so that, in itself, holds dear memories for me. ME represents a lot for me, in general - reminds me of finding my bisexuality; of my ex-gf, whom i thought would be my life partner; of my mid-20s, when i discovered so much about myself; of social justice, that i strive for.
Queen Fat Bottomed Girls - http://www.lyricsdomain.com/17/queen/fat_bottemed_girls.html
OK, ok- this seems kind of superficial, given my fat bottom lol... but it's a reminder of my first love, when we were 18. He was 5'11" and 130 lbs, such a skinny lad... we were virgins and i was fairly sexually adventurous... and this song just reminds me that not all men are looking for skinny minnies, and that johnboy and Reinar love my shape. It's something to be proud of, even as i want to lose weight. i never want or expect to be wafer thin, and i hope i always keep my curves. They have a lot to offer. ;0) Queen reminds me of my childhood, listening to them on my cassette player and just having a child's perspective about things. It also reminds me of sexual freedom, social issues, people who have passed...
James Taylor You've Got a Friend http://www.lyricsdomain.com/10/james_taylor/youve_gotta_friend.html
This is how strongly i feel about the people i love. i'd drop anything and come running, if my family called on me... and i have to add Your Smiling Face http://www.lyricsdomain.com/10/james_taylor/your_smiling_face.html - as a subsection on this one. This just reminds me of the three most important boys in my life: Reinar, johnboy and doodlebug. i melt when i see them smile and thank my lucky stars to be in their lives. It grows stronger every day. James Taylor is just a good, peaceful guy in his music, and sometimes i just like to have peaceful moments.
Gloria Estefan- No Llores http://www.lyricsdomain.com/7/gloria_estefan/no_llores.html
I had to include a song in Spanish, because that language has been such a part of me through school and career, and because it represents a mixing of cultures that i've experienced and valued throughout life. The song title means, "Don't Cry." let me know if you'd like me to translate it, cuz pretty much the whole song is stuff that i agree with. Gloria Estefan was one of the first musicians whom i listened to in Spanish, and a lot of her lyrics in Spanish are really beautiful, not just meant for immediate top 40 popularity. They often talk about being proud of her heritage and uniting latinos from different cultures because, after all, we're just one people.
Shakira Ciega Sordamuda http://www.lyricsdomain.com/19/shakira/ciega_sordamuda.html
Again, the Spanish... This song title translates to "Blind deaf-mute." It reminds me, at times, how i feel about being with Reinar and being His. It talks about being blind, deaf, mute, all kinds of things, for You, and becoming something that can only love - basically all the things you do/become because love has such a strong, illogical hold on you and you lose all sense of reason and just can't stand up... it's not really the most positive song with a positive spin, but my love hasn't always been rational or reasonable, or probably even in my best interests... but it has an undeniable hold on me and i stay because of it. i wouldn't take the song to its fullest extent, but i have related to it, at times, so it's a decent reminder for me. Shakira has a lot of angst in some songs, and a lot of deep love / passion. A couple songs, at least, make me wonder whether she's in the lifestyle.
Bonus: Janet Jackson I have to include Janet because i've loved her music since i was a teenager and because she DEFINITELY is in the lifestyle. (Hello, i think she has an entire CD titled, "Discipline" - and yes, there ARE songs on there that specifically mention D/s and bdsm.) Together Again http://www.lyricsdomain.com/10/janet_jackson/together_again.html
This song came out shortly after my maternal grandmother, who lived with me, died, and was still playing when my mom, who also lived with me, died. It's a song about a friend she lost to AIDS, and i grew up around gay friends who were affected by the disease and volunteered in efforts to help those afflicted and to help find a cure. So there is a lot of significance in that particular song for me. I also really like how, even through death, separation isn't permanent and the song has a positive outlook. i think that's what my mom and grandmother would want for me to believe, so i hold it close to my heart. It gives me hope and bittersweet happiness.
